BAGHDAD (AP) - More than 50 people are now reported dead in the
worst violence to hit Iraq since U.S. combat troops pulled out of
urban areas last week.
It's a sign that insurgents are still intent on destabilizing
Iraq as the U.S. shifts its focus to the war in Afghanistan.
The deadliest attack today was in the northern city of Tal Afar. Two coordinated suicide bomb attacks killed 38
people and injured more than 60 others. Insurgents also struck
Baghdad this morning, with roadside bombs that killed 13 people and
injured dozens.
Meanwhile, American forces have released five Iranian officials
who were suspected of helping Shiite insurgents. U.S. officials
said they believe the Iranians had helped bring about attacks on
U.S.-led forces before they were detained in January of 2007. But
they were turned over to the Iraqi government at the request of the
Iraqis. The Iranian Embassy says it expects to receive the men.
